Get your dirty hands out of my fruit! At what point do you decide that a component of my job is open to the public for leisurely consumption? Yeah, I’m talking about the bartender’s fruit tray, and in case you missed it, it’s not on the bar top for you to get a quick snack while waiting for a drink.

My fruit tray is there for ME to make cocktails for our guests, it’s not there as an alternative offering to the food menu. The food menu is exactly that: a menu of food for you to spend money on to satisfy your hunger. It’s a crazy concept, of the guest spending money, in an attempt for the business owner to turn a profit, so they will be open next year.

The common bar fruit tray consists of limes, lemons, oranges, olives and cherries. It doesn’t have any room for your crusty, non-bar employee hands! Maybe it’s asking a lot for people not to eat out of the fruit tray, but I will not compromise on this. If you open MY fruit tray and use YOUR ugly hands to steal a tasty little treat, it goes like this…

Guest: (opens fruit tray and takes an orange)

Bartender: Hey, what’s your employee number?

Guest: What do you mean?

Bartender: Do you work here?

Guest: No.

Bartender: So why do you think it’s okay to eat out of our fruit tray?

Guest: I wanted an orange.

Bartender: Well, clearly. I put that together already. I’m asking why you think it’s normal to do it? And for the sake of argument, you couldn’t even use the cocktail spears right next to the fruit tray instead of your bare hand?

Guest: I was hungry, sorry.

Bartender: Would you like to see a food menu?

Guest: No, I don’t like the food here.

Bartender: Am I in the Twilight Zone?

Guest: What do you mean?

Bartender: (walks away)

It’s about the bigger picture here, folks. If you would like a tasty little orange, just ask the bartender for one instead of deciding that the fruit tray is a public offering – because it isn’t.

I’d love to hear your comments, thoughts, and opinions. Tell me something at your job that drives you crazy, maybe I’m doing it to you!
