The Modern Eater Show 10/08/16

We open the show with Greg, chef Nikki and special guest Ross Kaminski from the Great American Beer Festival. The place was packed with beer lovers as far as the eye could see. The “Paired” event was the night before, and we talk about the awesome food and beer that was served.

Julia Herz the craft beer director of the Colorado Brewers Association is on the show to talk beer and what “craft” means to the B.A. Big brewers are buying up small brewers, find out how Julia and the Brewers Association feel about this and what it means for the future of craft beer. It’s awesome to win a medal at this event and it can be devastating to leave empty handed, but who and how is doing the judging? Julia is about to tell you.

Russel Fruits from Grimm Brothers Brewhouse is on the show and he brought his gold winning beer for us to taste, and this beer is gooooood! The medal winning beer is called Little Red Cap, and this isn’t the first medal for Little Red Cap, listen in to find out where else they have won. Also Russel tells us how brewers go about entering beers at the GABF, it’s very different than it used to be.

Chef Adam Dulye from the Brewers Association is on the show to talk about how he puts together the “Paired” event at the Great American Beer Festival. Also Adam tells us how restaurants actually get to be involved in the “Paired” event. It starts with having to be able to provide fourteen hundred plates of food two days in a row!

Charlie Papazian, the founder of the GABF and the Godfather of craft beer joins us on the show to talk about the last thirty five years of the Great American Beer Festival. Find out how Charlie got his start in home brewing, and eventually leading up to what the GABF is today. Charlie is also an author and has a few books out there that people revere as the “Beer Bible” when it comes to home brewing. Charlie tells us the real reason the GABF is so successful.

More with Charlie Papazian at the Great American Beer Festival, Tim Spense the new program director at KHOW joins the conversation with Charlie about why Colorado is the center of the universe when it comes to craft beer. Also Kyle Moyer, owner of the Crafty Fox tap house and Pizzeria joins the show at tells Greg and Charlie what it means to him to be sitting with a living legend and talking beer.

Kyle Moyer from the Crafty Fox and Tim Spense from KHOW talk with Greg about the general experience of being at the GABF and what is true craft beer to them. Also listen to Ross Kaminski tell a funny story about drinking from Mick Jagger’s glass!

It’s time for “Booze in the News!” Greg Hollenback and Kyle Moyer bring on to the show Jack Diebolt from Diebolt Brewing, also Brandon Proff, managing partner of Our Mutual Friend brewing company. Kyle get’s the perspective from the brewers and owners on their participation of an event this size. It’s the last night of the GABF, and we’re having a blast!
